Limb Salvage for Osteosarcoma: Current Status with a Review of Literature

چکیده
In the last 30 years a sea of change has occurred in the outlook for these cancers. Chemotherapy has allowed better local and systemic control5, 6. Better imaging with CT and MRI has allowed the surgeon to accurately define the extent and therefore plan tumor resection. Advances in bioengineering have provided exciting options for reconstruction and the world has moved from amputation to limb salvage. In osteosarcoma, survival improved from dismal 10-20% to 50-70%7, 8. Long term studies showed that limb salvage operations, performed with wide margins and chemotherapy did not compromise the survival or local control compared to an amputation9-14.

Osteosarcoma is the most common type of bone cancer that involves adolescents and young people. Amputation is usually proposed by some surgeons after diagnosis which is not acceptable for the patients. In this article, the results of limb-salvage procedures for patients with high-grade malignant osteosarcoma were investigated. The survival rate, functionality of limb, and complication...
متن کاملLATE EMBOLECTOMY FOR LIMB OR KNEE SALVAGE IN ACUTE LOWER LIMB ISCHEMIA: A NEW PROTOCOL
Embolectomy has long been the gold standard for treating limbs acutely threatened by arterial occlusion. Delayed embolectomy has not been investigated adequately due to the belief that accompanying mortality and morbidity render the case futile. Following our previous experience with late arterial repair for leg or knee salvage I we applied the same principle to limbs threatened with prolo...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether the efficacy of high-dose chemotherapy in the treatment of primary well-differentiated osteosarcoma is superior to moderate-dose chemotherapy. METHODS Cochrane systematic review method was used to retrieve literatures from MEDLINE, Embase, OVID, Cochrane Library database of clinical trials, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database CD-ROM, as well as manual searchin...
متن کاملA comparative study between limb-salvage and amputation for treating osteosarcoma.
PURPOSE Osteosarcoma is an aggressive malignant neoplasm, and conflicting findings have been reported on the survival and function recovery in osteosarcoma patients experiencing limb salvage or amputation. In the present study, we compared clinical outcomes regarding limb salvage surgery vs. amputation for osteosarcoma patients by a meta-analysis. METHOD Literature search was conducted in CNK...
